Opportunity Information: Apply for W81XWH 21 PCRP EIRA
The DoD Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Early Investigator Research Award (EIRA) is a career development-focused grant mechanism designed to help early-career scientists launch an independent trajectory in prostate cancer research while working under the close guidance of one or more experienced mentors. The intent is not only to fund a specific research project, but also to deliberately build the recipient's capabilities as a future leader in the prostate cancer field. A notable feature of this mechanism is that the postdoctoral researcher is treated as the Principal Investigator (PI) and is expected to write the application components themselves, using mentors for direction and feedback rather than having the mentors drive the proposal.
Eligibility centers on being truly early stage. The PI must have three years or less of postdoctoral research experience as of March 31, 2022, with clinical residency or clinical fellowship time excluded from that count. The program emphasizes that applicants should demonstrate clear promise and commitment to a research career at the forefront of prostate cancer science, but it also makes an important point: prior prostate cancer research experience is not required. In practice, this lowers the barrier for strong postdoctoral investigators from adjacent disciplines (for example, immunology, genomics, computational biology, health services research, or engineering) to pivot into prostate cancer if they can present a compelling plan and mentoring structure. The PCRP also explicitly encourages applications from investigators committed to prostate cancer health disparity research, signaling that equity-oriented work is a program priority rather than a side topic.
Mentorship is mandatory and tightly defined. Each application must include at least one mentor with demonstrated experience in prostate cancer research and mentoring, supported by indicators like active funding, recent publications, and a track record of successfully training researchers. The program allows the primary mentor to be junior faculty, but if that is the case it recommends adding a secondary mentor with a stronger and more established record. For proposals focused on health disparities, at least one mentor should have direct experience in prostate cancer disparity research. Across all projects, mentors are expected to show real commitment to helping the PI move toward independence, not simply providing lab space or a letter of support.
On the science side, proposed projects must address one or more FY21 PCRP Overarching Challenges, with strong encouragement for projects that advance health equity and reduce disparities in prostate cancer. The application needs to present a well-justified scientific rationale, a thoughtful experimental or analytical plan, and clearly defined methods that make the project feasible within the award period. Preliminary data are encouraged but not required, which is another way the program remains accessible to postdocs who are newly entering prostate cancer research; if preliminary data are included, they should come from the PI, mentor(s), or collaborators. Research involving human subjects and human anatomical substances is permitted, but clinical trials are explicitly not allowed under this mechanism. In other words, applicants can do clinical research and work with patients, specimens, records, or outcomes, but they cannot prospectively assign participants to interventions to evaluate effects on outcomes.
A defining requirement is the Researcher Development Plan. The PI must lay out an individualized plan that is specifically oriented around prostate cancer and explains how they will gain the skills, technical expertise, and professional competencies needed to complete the project and transition toward independence. The environment and training context must be described clearly, and the program recognizes that not every institution has every needed resource. Applicants can address gaps through collaborations with other institutions, and if the PI will rely on resources elsewhere, the program strongly encourages naming a co-mentor at the collaborating site to ensure meaningful training and oversight rather than a loose or transactional collaboration.
The announcement also emphasizes rigor, reproducibility, and translational relevance. Investigators are encouraged, where appropriate, to authenticate cell lines, apply strong statistical rigor in animal studies, and build in experiments that test clinical relevance and translatability. The program is receptive to modern, data-rich approaches as well, particularly studies that leverage large patient datasets with long-term records and biospecimen repositories and apply state-of-the-art genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, or mathematical modeling. Applicants are also urged to document access to required resources through letters of support, which is a practical signal that feasibility and readiness will matter in review.
From an administrative standpoint, awards are issued as federal assistance agreements, which may be either grants or cooperative agreements depending on the expected level of DoD involvement during performance. If the government anticipates no substantial involvement, the mechanism is typically a grant; if substantial involvement is expected (for example, collaborative participation or intervention in research execution), it becomes a cooperative agreement, and the specific involvement is identified during negotiation. The proposed work must be relevant to active-duty Service Members, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and/or the broader American public, and the program strongly encourages collaborations between military/Veteran institutions and non-military organizations to leverage unique populations, infrastructure, and expertise.
Funding and timing are clearly bounded. The anticipated direct cost cap for the entire period of performance is $300,000. For FY21, CDMRP expected to allocate about $10.08 million total to fund roughly 21 Early Investigator Research Awards, with actual funding dependent on federal funds availability and the scientific and programmatic merit of submitted applications. The original application closing date listed for this opportunity was July 1, 2021, and awards were expected to be made no later than September 30, 2022. Funds associated with FY21 awards were anticipated to expire for use on September 30, 2027, which matters for project planning and spending timelines.
Finally, the opportunity highlights several compliance and oversight requirements common to DoD-funded biomedical research. Any work involving human subjects, human anatomical substances, or human cadavers requires additional review by the USAMRDC Office of Research Protections, Human Research Protection Office (HRPO), on top of local IRB or ethics review; local IRB approval is not required at submission, but investigators should expect HRPO review to take at least 2 to 3 months. Cooperative multi-institution human subjects research requires a plan for single IRB arrangements. Animal research similarly requires review by ACURO in addition to local IACUC review, with expected timelines of 3 to 4 months. Applicants are directed to align preclinical rigor with widely cited standards and reporting guidance, including principles like randomization, blinding, sample-size estimation, and transparent data handling, as well as the ARRIVE guidelines for animal research reporting.Apply for W81XWH 21 PCRP EIRA
